
Ricoh GR III Image Control Modes Explained: All 12 Looks and When to Use Each
Ask someone what makes a Ricoh GR III recipe work and they'll usually start listing numbers: saturation +2, contrast -1, clarity +3. Those numbers matter, but they're adjustments on top of something. The something is the Image Control mode, and it's the single most consequential choice in the entire recipe — because the same "+2 saturation" behaves completely differently on Positive Film than it does on Standard.
Get the base mode wrong and no amount of slider work rescues the look. Get it right and you're often three small tweaks from finished. This guide covers all 12 Image Control options on the Ricoh GR III, what each one is genuinely built for, and which parameters each mode actually exposes.
Where Image Control Lives
Press the ADJ lever and it's usually the first item, or find it at the top of the still image shooting menu. Highlight a mode and press right to open its parameters — that submenu is where the real work happens, and it's the screen most owners never scroll through.
Two things worth knowing before you start:
- Parameter edits are saved per mode. Tune Positive Film once and it stays tuned. That's convenient until you forget you did it and wonder why a recipe from a blog doesn't match.
- Image Control only affects JPEGs. Shoot RAW+ while you're experimenting and the RAW is your safety net; the JPEG is your feedback loop.
Also check your firmware. Negative Film only exists from firmware v1.70 onward (January 2023) — if it's missing from your menu, that's why. The latest GR III firmware is v2.10, and updating is free.
The Four You'll Actually Live In
Positive Film — The default answer for colour street work, and the base under a large share of good Ricoh GR III recipes. It's Ricoh's slide-film emulation: deeper contrast than Standard, richer blues and greens, and a highlight roll-off that resists going chalky. Its trick is that it saturates selectively rather than globally, so reds and skies get punchy without skin turning orange. If you only ever learn one mode, learn this one. Negative Film — The newest addition and the most underrated. Ricoh built it to sit between "faded print from a lab" and clean modern colour: lifted blacks, gentle contrast, slightly muted saturation with the colour separation still intact. It is by far the easiest base for consumer colour-negative looks — Kodak Gold, ColorPlus, UltraMax — because it does the tonal work for you. Standard — Neutral, honest, and boring in the useful sense. Nothing is being done to your colours that you didn't ask for, which makes it the correct base when you want full control, or when you're shooting something where accuracy beats character: documents, product shots, museum and gallery work. Hard Monotone — The black and white workhorse. Higher contrast than plain Monotone, with blacks that actually reach black — which is what most people are chasing when they shoot mono on the GR III and end up disappointed by a flat grey file. Pair it with a red or orange filter effect for dramatic skies. Full treatment in our black and white guide, and it's the base for Ilford HP5 B&W.
The Specialists
Vivid — Standard with the saturation and contrast pushed. Genuinely good for autumn colour, markets and flowers; genuinely bad for anything with skin in it. Most people who like Vivid actually want Positive Film with saturation +1.
Monotone — Flat, even-toned black and white. Not exciting straight out of camera, which is exactly why it's the better mono base if you plan to adjust: you have headroom in both directions. Add contrast +2 and it becomes Hard Monotone with your fingerprints on it.
Soft Monotone — Lower contrast still, with a slightly hazy quality. Niche, but it's the right call for fog and mist and for portraits where Hard Monotone would carve up someone's face.
Hi-Contrast B&W — Extreme, grainy, blown-highlight monochrome in the Provoke-era tradition. Not a subtle tool and not meant to be. It works brilliantly on high-contrast shadow and light subjects and looks like a gimmick on everything else. Try it on a bright day with hard shadows before you dismiss it.
Bleach Bypass — Desaturated, high contrast, silvery — the cross-processing technique that gave Saving Private Ryan its look. Excellent for rain, industrial scenes, subways and overcast cities. Dial saturation up slightly from default and it stops looking like a filter and starts looking like a grade.
Retro — Warm, low-contrast, faded, with a sepia lean. It's a one-note mode, but the note is good: old photo albums, vintage and nostalgic work, sunlit interiors.
HDR Tone — Tone-maps a single exposure to compress the dynamic range. It looks aggressive by default and it isn't subtle, but at reduced effect strength it's a legitimate rescue for harsh midday sun where you can't otherwise hold both sky and shadow.
Cross Processing — Deliberately wrong colours, in the spirit of running slide film through C-41 chemistry. It's randomised, so consecutive frames of the same scene won't match. Fun, unrepeatable, and impossible to build a consistent recipe on.
The Parameters That Actually Change Things
Adjustable parameters differ by mode — the monochrome modes swap saturation and hue for toning and filter effect, HDR Tone gets a tone level, and so on. Four are worth understanding properly:
Clarity is the GR III's most powerful and most misused slider. It adds local mid-tone contrast, which reads as texture and presence — superb on brick, rust, wet asphalt and weathered faces. Past about +3 it starts producing halos on hard edges, and it is unkind to skin. Keep it at +1 to +2 for street, 0 or negative for portraits.
Contrast (Highlight) and Contrast (Shadow) are separate from overall contrast, and they're how you build film-like tonality. Nearly every convincing negative-film recipe pulls Contrast (Shadow) to -1 or -2 — that's what lifts the blacks into that slightly milky, printed-from-film quality. Overall contrast can't do this; it just crushes both ends.
Shading adds a vignette. Modest amounts (+1) genuinely help centre-weighted street compositions. It reads as cheap fast.
Grain Effect is available on the monochrome modes and adds texture at selectable strength. Useful at high ISO where it disguises noise as intent; heavy-handed at base ISO in daylight.
Pro tip: almost every mode also has an overall effect strength — reduce it before you start fighting individual parameters. HDR Tone, Bleach Bypass and Retro all become usable tools rather than novelty filters at 50–70% strength.
Image Control Is Half a Recipe
The other half is white balance. Image Control decides how the GR III renders tone and colour relationships; white balance decides what colour the frame is. A Kodak Gold look is Negative Film plus 6900K with a magenta shift — either one alone gets you a third of the way there.
Once a combination survives a few real shooting days, save the whole thing — Image Control, parameters, white balance, ISO limits — into a User mode and stop rebuilding it. Three slots is enough for a colour recipe, a mono recipe and a night recipe, which covers most of what anyone actually shoots.
